Brand name | Arawane |
Meaning of name | Arawane is a trading town north of Timbuktu. All trans-Sahara caravans that were heading towards Timbuktu had to pass through Arawane, where they could water and feed their camels after the long march through the desert. In former times, the chief of Arawane imposed high customs fees for each camel of a caravan. René Caillé writes that therefore traders preferred to load their camels heavily and travel slowly rather than giving the camels lighter loads and travel faster. Thé Arawane is available in different qualities indicated by different colours of the packages (beige, black, white). Arawane is a very popular tea brand, owned by a big Malian company. |
